Dart Frog Care 101

Creating the Perfect Habitat

  • Terrarium Setup: Dart frogs thrive in a humid, tropical environment. A well-planted vivarium with a mixture of live plants, mosses, and a substrate that supports microfauna is ideal.
  • Space Requirements: Although small, dart frogs are active and benefit from space to move. A 10-20 gallon tank is suitable for a small group, depending on the species.

Diet and Nutrition

  • Feeding Habits: These frogs primarily eat small insects like fruit flies and pinhead crickets. Feed them 2-3 times a week, and ensure the prey is dusted with a calcium and vitamin supplement.
  • Hydration: Provide a shallow water source and maintain high humidity through regular misting.

Temperature and Lighting

  • Ideal Conditions: Dart frogs prefer temperatures between 70-75°F and high humidity levels (80-100%). Avoid overheating and excessive dryness.
  • Lighting: While UVB lighting isn’t a strict requirement, it can benefit the live plants in the terrarium and indirectly benefit the frogs.

Regular Care and Health Monitoring

  • Cleanliness is Key: Regular cleaning and maintenance of the vivarium are essential to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
  • Observation: Regularly observe your frogs for signs of good health, including active behavior, a healthy appetite, and clear skin.

What Our Customers Say About Us

Great guys who do amazing work!! I ordered a large custom enclosure with a waterfall for my biak green tree python and it was more than I could ask for. I have fallen in love with it and it fits the aesthetic of my living room while adding tranquil vibes. There are so many different plants, vines, bamboo, wood, and moss it's beautiful; my snake looks peaceful in it. I cannot wait to order my next custom build, thank you so much!!

We had been looking to bring home a bearded dragon and found Avalon Exotics. I took my boys in, 8 and 4 and John answered every single question they had without skipping a beat. Even when my youngest was fixated on what type of container we would bring our bearded dragon home in. We did bring a dragon home and couldn't be happier. The boys ask repeatedly to go visit to see the tarantulas and frogs. Highly recommend them if your in the Buffalo area you need to stop in.

Had a wonderful experience here. We just stopped in to let our grandson see some lizards. They had so many things to look at. The young man who guided us through was so friendly and informative. We highly recommend Avalon to anyone who wants exotic pets

Drove about 4 hrs with my dad and well worth it! Huge dart frog selection plus way more reptiles/inverts than I expected. John was super nice and gave me some really great deals on the frogs too. Absolutely recommend this place to anyone interested in darts/exotics. We'll be back!

This place is beautiful and well-kept. The owner John is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and made my experience worthwhile. I didn’t even come in with the intent to buy anything (I didn’t make any purchases yet) but he was still so willing to walk me through anything. Having a local expert really makes all the difference. I can’t recommend coming here enough if you have any questions or concerns or just want to look around. I’ll definitely be back!

The owner John, is incredible! He has a ton of knowledge and only gets his animals from local breeders. That is, if he doesn’t breed them himself.
He has an amazing variety of animals!!

Got a crested gecko from there about a week ago, you can tell the owner has alot of experience from all his knowledge of reptiles! Owner is super friendly and nice. Also all the enclosures are clean and all the animals look well taken care of!

Excellent reptile shop. The owner, John is incredibly hands on with everything in the shop. He knows the history of the reptiles he sells & has multiple different morphs. Opposed to other shops that ship on their feeders, the feeders are all bred in house, so you know exactly where they're coming from and what they're fed. I definitely recommended Avalon Exotics for anyone looking for an exotic reptile, whether it be their first or 10th.

John and Heather are both amazing. They took care of my female beardie while I was deployed for 3 months. She came back to me healthier than I left her. I go to them for moat of my reptile needs. I enjoy supporting a small business especially when they care so much about what they do.

When I walked in, I was surprised to see the wide variety available—tons of options like reptiles, tarantulas, scorpions, frogs, and more. The owner was really cool and friendly; he knew a ton of information about his creatures and was clearly very educated about them. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for exotic pets, and I'll definitely be back!
